Bread & Roses

After the Taliban took Kabul in 2021, women lost their work, their schooling and their right to be out on the street. The documentary follows three women who took up the fight for their rights after that: Zahra, Sharifa and Taranom. Most of the footage was shot by the women themselves, which means the people keeping the record are the same ones taking the risk. The film does not deliver an assessment from a distance; it looks from inside the door and in real time. The three women are not reduced to a single story; what each of them lost and what each of them risked are kept apart from one another. Sahra Mani’s ninety minute documentary came out in 2024.
