Brick Lane

Nazneen is married off from Bangladesh to London at seventeen. Her husband Chanu is much older, talks a great deal and is always waiting for the next opportunity. Years pass, she has two daughters, and she barely leaves the flat in east London. Then she meets Karim, the young man who brings the fabric to the house. In the same period September 11 happens and the temperature of the neighbourhood changes. For the first time Nazneen has to choose something on her own account. Sarah Gavron directs, adapting Monica Ali's Booker-shortlisted novel. A hundred and two minutes, with Tannishtha Chatterjee as Nazneen. During production some Bangladeshi residents protested that the book presented them as uneducated; the production gave up filming on Brick Lane itself and moved elsewhere.
