What Broadway Idiot Is About
The documentary picks Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong up at a punk show in Madison Square Garden and carries him ten blocks to a Broadway stage. The distance is short and the gap is enormous: turning the American Idiot album into a musical is followed through months of rehearsal, with the cast and the creative team. The real subject is not the adaptation of a record but what the theatre does to Armstrong. The director Doug Hamilton had previously worked on programmes including 60 Minutes and Frontline. Michael Mayer directed the musical itself, and the documentary premiered at South by Southwest in March 2013.
