Bubble Bath

Zsolt Mohai is a window dresser in his forties, and on the morning of his wedding he knocks on the door of Anna, a friend of his fiancée. He wants one thing from her: to call Klára and say the wedding is off. Anna refuses. What follows is an argument among three people that lasts all day, about love, loyalty, ambition, and settling for family life in the city. György Kovásznai's film is an unusual example of Hungarian animation. The image is made with paint, with brushstrokes that keep changing and a style that does not hold still for a single frame; colour and form go on flowing while the characters talk. The technique matches the subject: nothing stays in place. It is also a musical, with songs entering the dialogue. The narrative is aimed at adults and takes daily life in the Budapest of its period as its direct subject. Who it's for: Anyone curious about experimental animation, musicals, and Eastern European cinema. Who it's not for: The visual style is dense and tiring for some viewers. The narrative is also almost entirely talk.
