What Burden Is About
The documentary follows the work of the American artist Chris Burden from beginning to end. In the early seventies, while still a student, Burden became known for performances that put his own body at risk: he had himself shot, shut himself in a small locker for days, had himself given electric shocks. The film gives these both through footage from the period and through interviews made near the end of his life. In later years Burden turned to large installations, and his piece made of old street lamps, standing in front of the museum in Los Angeles, became one of the emblems of the city. The account treats those two ends as part of the same story. The eighty eight minute American documentary by Timothy Marrinan and Richard Dewey was completed in 2016.
