What Buried: The 1982 Alpine Meadows Avalanche Is About
Jared Drake and Steven Siig's 2022 documentary concerns an avalanche at a California ski resort in 1982. Snow had fallen for days; the resort was closed, but there were people in the buildings and the car park. The documentary follows the search day by day. Most of the teams were the resort's own staff and some of the missing were their friends; the narrative places that double position at the centre and shows how the rescue decisions were made. A survivor and people who worked there at the time speak. Archive footage and photographs are used. The narrative enters the question of responsibility without turning to accusation. Who it's for: those who follow documentary on natural disaster and rescue. Who it's not for: viewers for whom accounts of death and recovering bodies would sit heavily.
