Caddo Lake

An eight-year-old girl disappears at Caddo Lake, on the border of Texas and Louisiana. Her stepsister Ellie looks for her. On the same water, a man named Paris, who lost his mother there years earlier, is chasing his own question. The two searches meet in the same lake and the film becomes a structure where past and present sit on top of each other in one place. Celine Held and Logan George wrote and directed. M. Night Shyamalan is among the producers. Dylan O'Brien and Eliza Scanlen star. It went out on Max on 10 October 2024. The idea came from a photograph: the two directors came across an image of the real Caddo Lake online and went repeatedly to that cypress forest on the Texas and Louisiana line. The lake is the strongest thing in the film; the tree trunks standing in the water break your sense of direction from the start and make the structure about time easier to build. The reviews split. One side called it a windingly intricate and delirious science fiction ride, the other found charting its narrative swamp a simple and unrewarding exercise. They agreed that O'Brien is good in it. Who it is for: viewers who like slow-building mysteries that play with time. Who it is not for: anyone wanting a clean answer. The ending tries to set every piece in place and it does not work for everybody.
