What Cairo 30 Is About
Mahgoub is a villager who has come to Cairo looking for a better life. When he asks Salem, a man from his own village, to help him find work, Salem produces both a post at the ministry where he works and a bride; but the bride is the mistress of Qasem Bek, who will visit her once a week, and the job is what that arrangement pays. Salah Abu Seif’s hundred and thirty minute film was adapted from Naguib Mahfouz’s novel New Cairo, published in 1945, with Mahfouz writing the screenplay himself.
