Call of the Wild

The years of the Klondike gold rush. Jack Thornton has lost at cards and no longer has the stake he needs to get to the Alaskan gold fields. On the way he buys Buck, a part-wolf sled dog, to keep him from being shot. With his partner Shorty he goes after a map showing where the gold is. Along the route they find Claire, whose husband has been lost, and the three continue together. The snow, the sled and the dog are what keep them alive. William A. Wellman directs, adapting Jack London's novel and departing from it considerably. Clark Gable and Loretta Young star. Young became pregnant during the shoot and concealed the birth for years; much later, towards the end of her life, she said the encounter had not been consensual.
