Camp 14: Total Control Zone

Marc Wiese's 2012 documentary rests on the testimony of Shin Dong-hyuk: a man who says he was born inside a North Korean political prison camp, spent his childhood and adolescence there, was put to work at six, went hungry and was beaten, and escaped at twenty three. In January 2015 Shin corrected part of what he had said. He stated that he had not spent his whole life in Camp 14 but had been moved as a child to Camp 18, and that the torture he described happened when he was twenty rather than thirteen. Blaine Harden, the journalist who wrote his book, made the corrections public and argued that the harshest details still stood; the North Korean government used the retraction to dismiss the account entirely. The documentary was made before any of that.
