What Canary Is About
Two children, each left behind by their families, join paths in the aftermath of the sarin gas attack in Tokyo. The film takes place after the real attack carried out on the subway by members of the Aum Shinrikyo cult, which killed a number of people. The account does not reenact the attack; it looks at the children left in the middle afterwards, at where they belong, and at carrying a past that nobody will claim. Throughout the journey of the two children the adult world stays at a distance. The film judges nobody by the community they are taken to represent. Hoshi Ishida and Mitsuki Tanimura appear in Akihiko Shiota’s hundred and thirty two minute Japanese film, completed in 2005.
