Farewell Song

Akihiko Shiota's 2019 Japanese film follows the final tour of a musical duo who have decided to break up. Haru and Reo became unexpectedly popular on the independent scene; they are separating regardless and set out together one last time, with Shima carrying their equipment. A three-way tension sits at the centre and advances entirely unspoken. The reason for the break-up is never stated either; it is left to be inferred from the scenes between stage, tour van and motel rooms. Music carries the film; the songs were written for it and the performers play and sing themselves. Nana Komatsu and Mugi Kadowaki play the duo. The road structure moves along Japan's northern coast, and the landscape sets the tone. Who it's for: those who like Japanese music drama and road movies. Who it's not for: viewers wanting things stated openly; the film refuses to define the relationship to the very end.
