What I Just Wanna Hug You Is About
Akihiko Shiota adapted this from a real life: a woman in Abashiri, Hokkaido, who learned to live with memory damage and a wheelchair after a serious traffic accident in her high school years. Tsukasa meets Masaki, a taxi driver who likes basketball, and the two of them try to build a life together in spite of what is against them. The director has described the film as a celebration of her life rather than an account of her death, and the point of view matches that, walking the narrow line between pity and heroic uplift. Keiko Kitagawa and Ryo Nishikido carry the parts without tipping into emotional exploitation.
