What Yomigaeri Is About

In the Japanese town of Aso the dead begin to come back, all of them appearing exactly as they were on the day they died, without having aged. The government sends the official Kawada to the town to work out what is happening. While preparing his report, Kawada watches the relations the townspeople form with those who have returned: some are happy, some are forced to forgive, some find a last chance to say what they could not say years ago. But once it becomes clear that the return has a time limit, everyone has to live through the same farewell a second time. In Akihiko Shiota’s hundred and twenty six minute Japanese film, Tsuyoshi Kusanagi plays Kawada and Yuko Takeuchi the woman opposite him, with Yūsuke Iseya and Show Aikawa in the cast. It was completed in 2003 and turns a fantastical premise into a story about mourning.
