What Careful, He Might Hear You Is About
Left by his father after his mother’s death, young PS lives on the outskirts of Sydney with his aunt Lila and her husband George. The household is modest, but the boy is happy in it. That order is broken when Lila’s wealthy sister Vanessa returns from England. Vanessa begins to take an interest in the boy, and PS is caught between two houses. The film tells the fight over who the child belongs to from the child’s own side. The difference of class in the Sydney of the twenties sits under the account. How the love of adults turns into a pressure on a child is the real subject. The story is adapted from a novel. Wendy Hughes and Nicholas Gledhill appear in Carl Schultz’s hundred and ten minute Australian film, completed in 1983.
