What Carnival Is About
Nina lives with her mother in a small city in the Urals, wants to act, and goes to Moscow. When she fails the entrance exam for the theatre school she starts looking for any way to stay: taking work, tracking down the father who walked out on them years ago, and falling for a man who will use her and leave. Tatyana Lioznova's film is at once a musical entertainment and a fairly bleak drama about trying to get a foothold in a big city. Irina Muravyova's performance was among the most talked about in the Soviet Union that year. The songs were dubbed by another singer; two years later Muravyova recorded the best known of them in her own voice, and that song is still remembered.
