Boo Ji-young's 2014 South Korean film draws on a real event from 2007: to circumvent a new law requiring that employees be given regular status, the Homever supermarket chain owned by the E-Land Group dismissed its temporary workers, most of them women, and replaced them with outsourced staff. The strike that followed lasted more than five hundred days. The film tells that process starting from the daily lives of the women working the floor. Its strength is that the women do not want to resist at first: each has a household, children and debts, and the idea of a union is foreign to them. The politicisation is built slowly and convincingly. The performances of Yum Jung-ah and Moon Jeong-hee work without heroising anyone. The ending offers no optimism, which stays faithful to how the real strike went. Who it's for: viewers interested in stories of labour organising, Korean social cinema and films about women's work. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a struggle that ends in victory, or unprepared for the harshness of the scenes of police intervention.
