Mart Toome What Chainsaws Were Singing Is About
Sander Maran's 2024 Estonian film opens with two new lovers separated by a killer. The killer's weapon is a chainsaw, and the film uses it to excess. The structure is that of a musical. The characters speak in song and the gore is staged as comedy; the narrative never once attempts seriousness. The film was made over more than ten years on a very small budget. The effects are handmade, which is a deliberate choice. The tone is exaggeration throughout. Who it's for: those who like extreme genre mixtures and independent horror comedy. Who it's not for: viewers troubled by gore; the film shows it constantly and to excess.
