What Chang: A Drama of the Wilderness Is About
Deep in the jungle of northern Siam, Kru and his family try to protect their field and their animals; leopards, tigers and finally a herd of elephants come down on the village. It is a silent film made by Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack together, financed by Paramount, who had been impressed by the pair's Grass in 1925. It was shot on location with real animals, but built onto an invented dramatic structure, so the line between documentary and staging is blurred from the outset. When it opened in New York in 1927 the elephant stampede was projected enlarged to fill the whole proscenium. It was nominated at the first Academy Awards. A few years later Cooper and Schoedsack made King Kong.
