What This Is Cinerama Is About

The film was made to introduce the widescreen process that was then new. The audience is shown a roller coaster at an amusement park, a temple dance from Aida, Niagara Falls, a Viennese choir, the canals of Venice, a military tattoo in Edinburgh and a bullfight. It closes with images taken from the nose of a low flying bomber. The account builds no story; its purpose is to show what the technique can do and it says so openly. For that reason the film stands today as a document as much as a spectacle. The width of the screen and its sound system changed the cinemas of the period. The hundred and fifteen minute American film by Merian C. Cooper and Gunther von Fritsch was completed in 1952.
