Charles Bradley What Charles Bradley: Soul of America Is About
Charles Bradley had a hard life in Brooklyn until he was sixty two: abandonment, homelessness, a catastrophe in the family. For years he worked the stage as a James Brown impersonator. When his first album, No Time for Dreaming, came out it landed on Rolling Stone’s list of the fifty best albums of 2011, and he began to be seen as a soul singer and songwriter in his own right. Poull Brien had met him on a music video shoot and followed him through the months before the record appeared. The documentary premiered at South by Southwest in 2012. The recordings Bradley made with Daptone and Dunham run through the middle of it.
