What Charlie Chan on Broadway Is About
A former singer who fled to Europe to avoid testifying against her criminal associates comes back to New York. She is carrying a diary that tells everything, and she is killed to keep her quiet. Charlie Chan and his eldest son Lee get into it, and what follows is a tight sixty eight minute series picture moving between reporters, nightclubs and statements that do not line up. It is 1937 and it carries the standard practice of the period: the Chinese detective is played by a non Chinese actor, the Swedish born Warner Oland. No Chinese actor ever played Chan across the whole run of the series. Keye Luke, playing Lee, was Chinese American, and he is the liveliest thing in it.
