What Charlie Chan in London Is About
A young man named Paul Gray is waiting to be executed for the murder of a weapons inventor. His sister Pamela is convinced he is innocent and, with a few days left before the execution, she goes to Charlie Chan. Chan travels to the English country house where it happened. Everyone there, hosts and guests and servants alike, has a story and something to hide. Warner Oland, born in Sweden, plays Chan in this entry of Fox's long-running Charlie Chan series; it was the Hollywood habit of the period and it is the most discussed thing about the series today. Against that, Oland's Chan is the most intelligent person in the room, unlike the parts written for Asian characters in American films of those years. The entry takes place in a crowded English country house, and a young Ray Milland is in the cast at the start of his career. Seventy-nine minutes, the shape clean and quick.
