What Charlie Chan's Murder Cruise Is About
On a liner sailing from Honolulu to San Francisco, Charlie Chan investigates the murder of a friend from Scotland Yard and runs into four more killings along the way. A closed space, a limited set of suspects and everyone with something to hide: the shipboard version of a pattern the series used many times. Eugene Forde directed, adapting Earl Derr Biggers’ 1930 novel Charlie Chan Carries On, and the film is a remake of the 1931 version of the same book, now lost. Lionel Atwill and Leo G. Carroll are among the sturdy character actors playing suspects. Chan is again played by a white actor, Sidney Toler, which is what the series is most argued about today, because the Chinese detective was never once given to a Chinese actor.
