Raat Akeli Hai

A murder is committed at a mansion in Uttar Pradesh. Raghubeer Singh is the strong man of the region; he is killed on his wedding night. Everyone in the family is a suspect: his new wife, his children, his brother, his nephew and the staff. Jatil Yadav is sent to investigate. He is a policeman in his forties; unmarried, living with his mother, and nobody in the force takes him seriously. Yadav starts asking. Everyone lies, and under every lie another matter appears. At the same time his superiors want the file closed. Honey Trehan directs; it is his first film as director. Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays Yadav and Radhika Apte the new wife; Shweta Tripathi and Tigmanshu Dhulia are in the cast. The language is Hindi. Trehan worked for a long time as a casting director and this is his first film. It was released on a streaming platform. Its form is the closed house mystery; there are a limited number of suspects and the events take place in one household. The matter it treats is caste and property; the reason for the killing is tied to land and the order of inheritance. The detective is not a type; he has prejudices of his own and the narrative shows them. The narrative works out the position of the women separately and does not put the crime on one person. Its limit is length; the narrative is long and repeats in its middle stretch. Who it is for: viewers who like Indian crime films and classic murder puzzles. Who it is not for: it is long, there are many characters, and the pace slow.
