What Chicken with Plums Is About
In Tehran in 1958, Nasser-Ali Khan, one of the best known violinists of his day, has his instrument broken. Finding nothing that can replace it, he lies down on his bed and starts waiting to die. Across the eight days of that wait his life comes back to him: his childhood, his family, the great love he never got over, and why he attached himself to music in the first place. Adapting her own graphic novel, Marjane Satrapi builds the film like a stage set and places fable and pain side by side. Mathieu Amalric plays Nasser-Ali, with Golshifteh Farahani and Isabella Rossellini in the cast.
