What Chocolate Is About

A Thai martial arts film. Zen is a young autistic woman. She does not speak and does not meet people's eyes, but she has one ability: she can watch a movement once and reproduce it exactly. She grows up watching fight films on television and observing the training gym next door. When her mother falls ill, money is needed for treatment. Zen and her friend find her mother's old notebook: a list of debts owed to her years ago. They start going door to door asking for the money. Nobody wants to pay. That is the whole structure: every debtor is a fight. An ice factory, an abattoir, a warehouse and, in the last section, the outside of a building are used in turn. There are no computer effects in the fights and wire work is limited. The closing credits show the injuries sustained during the shoot; that section became part of the film's reputation. JeeJa Yanin plays Zen; she trained in martial arts for years for the part and this was her first film. Prachya Pinkaew directed. A notable production within its genre for anyone who likes martial arts films. For a viewer looking for story, it is thin and the film depends entirely on its fights.
