What Christ Stopped at Eboli Is About
Carlo Levi, a painter and doctor exiled by the fascist government for political reasons to the southern region of Lucania, has to live in a village for a year. The peasants are cut off from the state, the city and history; in their own phrase, even Christ never came this far and stopped at Eboli. Francesco Rosi directed. Gian Maria Volonte plays Levi. The source is Levi's own account, published in 1945. The film was actually shot as four television episodes; the cinema version is a shortened form and the full cut runs about four hours. Rosi records the villagers not as actors but inside their own lives, and shooting took place in the real villages of the region. The narrative builds no plot. Seasons pass, patients arrive, war news comes over the radio, and Levi goes on watching as a painter. Its political argument is plain: the southern question is not a matter of development but of historical exclusion. Who it is for: viewers who like Italian political cinema and slow, observational storytelling. Who it is not for: anyone wanting pace; the film is deliberately still.
