What The Truce Is About
It took Primo Levi months to get home after Auschwitz was liberated, on a route that wandered through Poland, Belarus, Ukraine and Romania before it finally turned towards Turin. Francesco Rosi adapted Levi's 1963 book of the same name and films the return not as a liberation but as a long drift across a Europe suspended between war and peace, where nothing has settled into place yet and no one is sure what comes next. John Turturro plays Levi. It competed at Cannes in 1997 and turned out to be the last feature Rosi directed.
