Vito Polara is an ambitious man; he decides to leave cigarette smuggling and take over the whole of the region’s fruit and vegetable distribution, because there is more money in it. To do that he goes looking for the backing of a rural crime organisation, and once he is in he cannot get out. It was Francesco Rosi’s first film as director, written with Suso Cecchi d’Amico and Enzo Provenzale. The story is real: it comes out of the case of the Camorra boss Pasquale Simonetti and his wife Pupetta Maresca. Rosanna Schiaffino plays Maresca and José Suárez plays Polara.
