What Cinco de Mayo: The Battle Is About
5 May 1862, Puebla. A few thousand Mexican soldiers hold a defence against a far larger and better-equipped French army, and win. The French army was reckoned the strongest in the world at the time. One misunderstanding is worth correcting: Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's independence day; independence is marked on 16 September. Nor did the victory at Puebla end the war, and the French took Mexico City the following year. Rafael Lara directed. The battle scenes are large, the telling is on the heroic side, and it simplifies the history considerably.
