What City of Joy Is About
In Bukavu, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, there is a walled and guarded compound called City of Joy. Women who have survived sexual violence stay there for a term, and the point of the place is to move them from being survivors to being leaders who go back to their own regions. Madeleine Gavin's documentary follows the first intake of students. The founders appear too: the gynaecologist Denis Mukwege, the Congolese activist Christine Schuler Deschryver and the playwright Eve Ensler. Mukwege shared the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize with Nadia Murad for his work against sexual violence in war. The film does not soften what it is told, but it points the camera at the women telling each other and at what comes after.
