What Cleanflix Is About
Small companies founded in Utah begin cutting swearing, nudity and violence out of Hollywood films and selling cleaned-up copies; most of their customers are Mormon families and the demand is large. Directors and studios treat this as a breach of copyright and of the work itself, and the lawsuits that follow drive the business to close. The documentary listens to both sides: the question of who a film belongs to, and a community’s wish to watch by its own measure. At the end of the account, one of the men behind the business being tried for another crime changes the matter entirely. The eighty five minute American documentary by Andrew James and Joshua Ligairi was completed in 2009.
