What Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives Is About
Clive Davis built a career on hearing what a record could become before anyone else did. Drawing on Davis's 2013 memoir, Chris Perkel's documentary follows him from an improbable start at Columbia through the Arista and J Records years, tracing the decisions that shaped Janis Joplin, Santana, Barry Manilow, Carly Simon, TLC and, most famously, Whitney Houston. Simon Cowell, Jimmy Iovine, Sean Combs, Alicia Keys and Paul Simon supply the testimony. It opened the sixteenth Tribeca Film Festival at Radio City Music Hall, and across two hours the music keeps interrupting the biography, which is rather the point.
