A year before his retirement, the Vermeer specialist and curator at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam goes after his great dream: to mount the largest Vermeer exhibition ever made. The documentary follows the preparation; paintings are requested on loan from all over the world, examinations are carried out, and whether certain works are really by Vermeer is argued over. Specialists and enthusiasts ask the same question: what is it that makes a Vermeer a Vermeer. The documentary presents the exhibition not as a result but as something that comes out at the end of a long preparation and a long argument. Suzanne Raes’s seventy seven minute Dutch documentary was completed in 2023.
