Cobra Verde is a feared bandit in Brazil. Set to oversee slaves on a sugar plantation, he gets the owner's daughters pregnant, and instead of killing him the man sends him to Dahomey in West Africa on an errand designed to be fatal: reopen a slave trade that has been shut down. He is expected to die there. He survives and raises an army instead. Herzog adapted Bruce Chatwin's novel and worked with Klaus Kinski for the last time. This is not a man the film asks you to admire.
