Coffee Town

Will manages a website and does not go to an office; he sits all day in the neighbourhood coffee shop. The same table, the same coffee, and he meets his two friends there. Then the owners decide to expand: new equipment, a new layout, and no room for people sitting with laptops. Will cannot accept it. The three friends make a plan; to stage a robbery, make the place look dangerous to the neighbourhood and bring back the old order. The plan looks simple. Brad Copeland wrote and directed. The film was made as the first feature from an internet humour site and was released directly online. The matter it treats is resisting change; what the character is defending is in fact nothing. The narrative rests on the dialogue of three friends and the plot is thin. The film aims at coffee shop culture and at people pretending to work in one. Glenn Howerton plays the character as selfish and unpleasant, and the film does not try to reform him. The narrative adds a romantic line out of obligation and that side stays weak. Some of the jokes rest on crudeness and do not land. The ending resolves everything easily. Its limit is scale; the narrative is small, the pace flat, and the comedy uneven. Who it is for: viewers who like American independent comedy and this cast. Who it is not for: the plot is thin, it is uneven, and the ending simple.
