What Comandante Is About
In 2002 Oliver Stone spent three days filming Fidel Castro in Cuba. The conversation is long and wide: how he came to power, Che Guevara, the missile crisis, relations with the United States, the state of the country now. Stone asks, Castro talks. The camera mostly sits between the two of them. The film screened at Sundance in 2003. The broadcast did not go as planned. After Cuba executed three men who had hijacked a ferry and jailed more than seventy dissidents, HBO pulled the programme shortly before it was due to air. The film was also criticised for going easy on Castro. Stone responded by making a second documentary.
