What Come to the Stable Is About
Two French nuns arrive unannounced in a small New England town called Bethlehem. Their aim is to build a children's hospital; what they have is no money, no land and nobody they know. They begin calling on everyone in town one by one: the landowner, the lawyer, the man who writes songs. Nobody says yes the first time. Henry Koster's film puts into comedy how much persistence good intentions took in post-war America. Loretta Young and Celeste Holm play the nuns, and Elsa Lanchester the artist who helps them. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards, with Holm and Lanchester competing in the same category. The tone is sweet and free of conflict.
