What Come Tomorrow... Is About

Frosya Burlakova arrives in Moscow from a distant Siberian village, intent on entering the conservatoire. Admissions have closed, nobody takes her seriously, and everyone tells her to come tomorrow. She stays anyway, haunting the corridors for days until a well known professor finally agrees to hear her sing. Yevgeni Tashkov's 1962 film treats the collision between a country girl and the capital as comedy and as injury at once. Ekaterina Savinova drew on her own life for the part, which is why Frosya's plainness is never the butt of the joke, and Anatoli Papanov's sculptor gives the film a second centre of gravity.
