What Congress Dances Is About
During the Congress of Vienna, the Austrian statesman plans to keep his rival the Russian tsar away from the negotiating table by surrounding him with beautiful women. The tsar has a plan of his own: he hires a man who looks exactly like him to stand in, and by appearing to be everywhere at once he confuses the Austrians. Both the tsar and his double, however, fall for the same woman, Christel, who sells gloves. Erik Charell’s ninety four minute UFA production is one of the classics of early German sound cinema and is counted among the studio’s most successful answers to American dominance. Lilian Harvey, Willy Fritsch and Conrad Veidt star, and it was shot in three separate versions, in German, French and English.
