What Control Room Is About
The first weeks of the 2003 Iraq war. The documentary stands in two places at once: inside Al Jazeera's newsroom in Qatar and inside the press operation of US Central Command in the same city. On one side, journalists explaining the war to an Arab audience; on the other, Josh Rushing, the press officer giving the daily briefings. Jehane Noujaim watches both closely, and does not look away while Rushing's own certainties come apart. The strike on Al Jazeera's Baghdad office and the death of the correspondent Tareq Ayyoub is the film's turning point. It puts the question of who is reporting and who is doing propaganda to both sides at once.
