Conversations with Mother

Jaime has lost his job and has a wife and two children to provide for. Under that pressure he visits his mother, who lives in an apartment registered in his name, meaning to ask her to move in with him so that he can sell it. But she will have nothing to do with the idea. And there is something else that astonishes Jaime: his mother has a boyfriend. The film shows old age not as a problem of care but as the condition of someone able to make her own decisions. The account is built almost entirely out of conversation and slowly opens up what the two generations cannot agree on. The money is the surface of the argument; underneath it lies another reckoning. China Zorrilla and Eduardo Blanco appear in Santiago Carlos Oves’s ninety minute Argentine film, completed in 2004.
