What Cracked Up Is About
The documentary tells the life of the actor and master impressionist Darrell Hammond. Through long years of television work he was dealing offstage with flashbacks, self harm, addiction and wrong diagnoses; why only became clear much later, when he remembered the abuse he suffered as a child. The film shows how trauma spreads across a whole life, setting comedy and pain side by side. The aim is not to turn shame into an explanation but to make the thing itself understandable. The doctors and colleagues who speak place what he says in context rather than confirm it, and the account never turns into a diagnosis. Michelle Esrick’s ninety five minute American documentary was completed in 2019.
