What Crayon Shin-chan: Very Tasty! B-class Gourmet Survival!! Is About
Masakazu Hashimoto's 2013 animated film is one of the feature entries in the Crayon Shin-chan series. Shin-chan and his friends are charged with delivering a barrel of legendary sauce to a food festival; hunger, rival groups and a string of absurd obstacles lie on the way. The series' humour is in place here: adult conventions broken by children's logic, crude jokes and emotional moments surfacing now and then. What is distinctive is putting Japan's regional popular food culture at the centre of the story; every stop is another local taste. The narrative is episodic and loose. For a viewer new to the series the character relationships do not open up quickly. Who it's for: families who follow Crayon Shin-chan and anyone who likes Japanese comedy animation. Who it's not for: adults new to the series, or anyone who dislikes crude humour.
