What Crips and Bloods: Made in America Is About
The documentary is about how two gangs, the Crips and the Bloods, came about in South Los Angeles. It does not start with the gangs: it starts with the rules that decided which neighbourhoods Black families could live in during the forties and fifties, the clubs that were closed to them, police violence, and the absence of any institution a young person could join. Political organisations form in the sixties and are then broken up. By the seventies what is left is the street. The film talks to the men who lived it, most of them still on the same blocks forty years on. Stacy Peralta directs; ninety-three minutes, narrated by Forest Whitaker, with Jim Brown among those speaking. Peralta had made documentaries about skateboarding and comes from the same part of the city. The film describes the violence and also looks for its cause, and finds it not in the gangs but in what came before them.
