What Cryptopia: Bitcoin, Blockchains & the Future of the Internet Is About
The documentary goes inside the world of cryptocurrency and follows one question: can blockchain actually build a decentralised, fair and uncensored internet, or will the same large corporations end up dominating this field as well. Starting from how Bitcoin works, it takes the industry's narratives, its conflicts and its leading figures in turn. Torsten Hoffmann's film is a follow-up to the bitcoin documentary he made in 2015. He is neither admiring nor hostile towards the people he interviews; he lets them state their claims and then presses on them. The interview with Craig Wright, who has declared himself Satoshi Nakamoto, is an example of that approach; the film treats Wright's claim with scepticism. Bitcoin's splits and Satoshi's disappearance are where the telling closes.
