What Crystal Sky of Yesterday Is About
In Lanxi, a small town in southern China, three students in their last year of high school, Tu Xiaoyi, Yao Zhetian and Qi Jingxuan, are caught among their own ambitions, their friendships and a first love. The film builds no great event; it spends a summer on exam pressure, family, drawing and things that cannot be said. At its centre is an affection that goes unreturned, and the film treats that not as tragedy but as something that happens at that age. It was adapted from the manhua by the artist known as Pocket Chocolate, who began work on the adaptation in the summer of 2015. Xi Chao directed. It opened on 26 October 2018 and took more than twelve million dollars. In the record the director’s name is stored in Chinese characters rather than in the Latin alphabet.
