Kase-san and Morning Glories

Yamada is a shy high school student who likes tending the flowers in the school grounds. A relationship begins between her and Kase, the star of the athletics team. As graduation approaches, the film takes up the possibility of them choosing universities in different cities. Takuya Sato directed, from Hiromi Takashima's comic series. The structure is short, around an hour. The story concentrates on one question and opens no subplots. What sets it apart is that the conflict does not come from outside. Nobody opposes the relationship, no hiding is required; the tension is only about the future. That is not a usual choice in the genre; similar stories are generally built on pressure and concealment. The visual style is soft and pastel, with plants and the turning of the seasons part of the telling. Who it is for: viewers who like calm youth anime and the yuri genre. Who it is not for: anyone waiting for events; the film is almost entirely emotional detail.
