Cunningham

Merce Cunningham was an American choreographer. He founded his own company. The documentary takes on a thirty year stretch of his work. It runs from the early nineteen forties to nineteen seventy two. The film was shot in 3D. Sections of fourteen dances were staged again for it. The last generation of the company took on that staging. Filming was done indoors and outdoors, in Germany, France and New York. Those sections were shot over eighteen days. Jennifer Goggans led the restaging. Archive footage runs between them, with John Cage and Robert Rauschenberg in it, both of them long time collaborators of Cunningham’s. It opened in cinemas in December 2019. Carolyn Brown and Ashley Chen also appear in the ninety three minute film, a French, German and American production Alla Kovgan finished in 2019.
